Left or Right?

I attended 2 meetings yesterday, in the morning and afternoon respectively. The first time I stepped out of the elevator and turn left to go outside the building. But in the afternoon I took the elevator of the other side, so I should turn right to leave, rather than left as morning. The problem is, every time I came out of the elevator, it always cost me 1-3 seconds to recognize which direction I should head to. Left or right?  The same happened to my colleagues frequently as well.  My solution is easy to be realized: to add direction information. Once the elevator open, people in it can immediately catch the direction, without recognizing by themselves.  Even an simple paper arrow sticking to the wall will do the trick.

Another issue can be improved is states hint.  The elevator in the 24-floor building office only tell me “it’s going upwards” or “it’s going downwards”. I still don’t know where it is NOW, how long it can reach me, and for which elevator I should wait. In the web and application design, we provide users states when system is  working and users are waiting. Users concern what’s going on, what step it’s in, and how long it will take.

Test Functional Colors in Various Screen

A color value can be recognized clearly in one screen, while in another screen is hardly seen. It hurts the user experience if related to some operations. We may reckon this kind of color as functional color. Take the below for example. The second item in the list gets high-lighted. But there’s nearly nothing in my screen. If I click ENTER, the second one would be selected BY ME, or you can say NOT by me.

Esthetic color is something  subjective without fixed roles. And regards to functional color, we may set up at least one bottom line, that is not to negatively impact on users’ operation. My point is quite simple. Just to test in different screen when you are deciding a color value.

What’s Design?

Many take UX design as a work to beautify or produce the interfaces.  I am always too lazy to explain it. A short explanation hit my mind. Next time I would tell you design is to make balance among various issues, to fix problems, to make desicions. Thus design is a course of thinking, more than doing, not to mention painting.
